Grim's ram – Goodgame Empire

Grim's ram

Offensive

A strong specialized ram against well-defended gates - it reduces the gate's defensive bonus, so deploy it on tough targets with a full attacking composition, not on weak castles.

Quick overview

TypeOffensive

The Deathbringer's Ram is a siege tool that reduces the defensive bonus of the enemy gate. The gate has its own additional defense bonus compared to the walls, so when you knock it down, you weaken the best-protected slot, making it easier for all your attacking units to target it. It is among the stronger rams, so if you have it in production or in stock, don't waste it on weak targets - it needs tougher nuts where the reduction of the bonus really pays off.

How to use it

You deploy it in an attack against the gate - on the slot where the opponent has the highest defense due to the defensive bonus. The ram first bites off a piece of that defensive bonus, and only then do your attacking units lean into the weakened defense. It makes the most sense against well-defended targets: enemy castles with full garrisons, strong NPC targets, or anything where your attack is unlikely to succeed. Don't waste it against an empty or nearly undefended gate; even a regular cheap ram will outperform it there.

What to combine it with

Put it in the attack wave together with other siege tools - ladders and siege towers help you overcome the walls, while the ram reduces the gate's bonus. It's important to coordinate it with units: the ram lowers the defensive bonus, but the actual battle is won by swords and bows, so send it with a full-fledged attacking composition, not solo. It works well in combination with attacking castle lords and tools that boost unit attacks, as a weakened gate plus a strong attack means significantly fewer losses on your side.

Pro player tipCheck in advance how your opponent has arranged their defense. If most of their strength relies on the gate and its bonus, the ram is gold - you will reduce their defense right where it hurts the most. Conversely, if their defense is spread out to the flanks and the gate is almost empty, deal with the sides using ladders and towers, and save the ram for a target where the gate has something to defend. And always attack with full strength slots - an incomplete attack won't be saved by the ram.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is throwing the expensive Deathbringer's Ram at weak or undefended targets, where a cheap siege tool would serve just as well - you're just wasting resources and production time. The second classic mistake is sending the ram without sufficiently strong attacking units: while you will reduce the gate's defensive bonus, if a proper attack doesn't follow, you still won't succeed, and the tool will go to waste.
