Boulders are a classic siege tool whose sole purpose is to break the defenders' wall protection. When you attack a castle, well-defended walls significantly reduce your attack, and boulders will lower this value, allowing your units to advance further with fewer losses. A boulder itself does not kill any enemies, but without it, you will only struggle through well-defended walls at a high cost. I consider it essential equipment for any serious attack on a castle.
How to use it
Always deploy boulders when the target has active wall protection - that is, practically on every living player's castle. You place them in the siege section of the formation along with other tools, not among the units. The better the castle is defended on the walls, the more boulders it pays off to bring along to lower the protection as much as possible. However, it is a waste against weak NPCs or targets without wall bonuses - in such cases, feel free to skip them and save space and resources.
What to combine it with
Boulders are offensive siege tools complemented by battering rams, which deal with the gate, and siege towers, which help you over the moat and facilitate access to the walls. A boulder only reduces wall protection, so for a complete offensive formation, you also need tools for the remaining defensive elements and, of course, enough swordsmen or archers depending on how the defender strengthens the front and rear defenses. It works as a whole - boulders take down the walls, other tools open the gate and access, and then the units finish off the rest.
