The University is purely a supportive economic building that increases the productivity of your research tower. It does not produce or defend anything on its own, but it allows your research on the tower to run more smoothly and you get more out of it in the same amount of time. Frankly, it is a building that most players appreciate only when they actually start researching on the tower and are held back by waiting. Until then, it just takes up valuable 5×5 tiles without providing you anything.
When to build it
Don't rush to build it. It only makes sense when you have a built and actively used research tower and want to speed up ongoing research. In the early stages, when you are dealing with resource production, castle defense, and army, the University will not bring you anything that helps you grow. Build it when your tower is creating a bottleneck and you want to get more out of your research without waiting longer.
Is it worth upgrading?
It is worth upgrading only in proportion to how much you use the tower. If the tower is running at full capacity and you are investing a lot of time and resources into research, higher levels of the University will pay off in saved time. However, if you are using the tower more sporadically, there is no point in pushing the University to the maximum right away. It is better to pour resources into production or the army and gradually upgrade the University as your need for faster research grows.
