The Blacksmith is an economic building that increases the productivity of the siege and defense workshops. It does not produce anything by itself; it only speeds up what those workshops churn out, namely siege and defense tools. Honestly, until you are actively waging war or preparing for defense, it is a building you will hardly notice. However, once you start regularly battering foreign castles or defending your own, it suddenly makes sense.
When to build it
Build it only when you are actually using siege or defense tools, not before. In the very beginning, when you are dealing with wood, stone, and food, it is useless to you and just takes up space of 5×5, which is not insignificant. It makes sense when you are attacking castles, gathering resources outside your castle, or anticipating that someone will be rolling over you. At that point, it becomes a useful assistant.
Is it worth upgrading?
Upgrading is only worthwhile if the workshops are really running at full capacity and cannot churn out tools as quickly as you consume them. If you are only building tools occasionally, a lower level is sufficient, and pouring resources into higher levels is a waste. However, once you are an active warrior and your workshops are in full swing, gradual upgrading will pay off in production speed. Consider it a building that you upgrade alongside your military activity, not as a priority in itself.
