Charcoal burner – Goodgame Empire

Charcoal burner

Economic

A reliable source of coal that is better to upgrade than to multiply, and to build it only when you actually start to miss coal.

Quick overview

Max level11
Size5×5
PriorityMedium priority

The Charcoal Burner produces coal, which is a resource you constantly need for recruiting and especially for advanced research and buildings. Without a stable supply of coal, your economy and army will eventually stall, so this 5x5 building is not a luxury but a standard backbone of the castle. I personally consider it among the production buildings that are worth thinking about from the beginning.

When to build it

Build it as soon as you start running into a coal shortage, typically when you transition from a purely wood-stone economy to higher levels of buildings and units. Coal will start to deplete faster than you can produce it, and that’s when it’s time. Keep at least one functional Charcoal Burner continuously and add more as your consumption grows.

Is it worth upgrading?

Upgrading is definitely worth it; a higher level means more coal from the same location, and space in the castle is always the most expensive. Instead of building three weak Charcoal Burners, it’s almost always better to upgrade one to a higher level and only then add another. The full maximum (level 11) makes sense to address at a castle where you are consistently short on coal; for secondary holdings, a reasonable middle ground is sufficient.

Pro player tipSurround the Charcoal Burner with decorations that increase resource production in the area to maximize coal output from its area. The bonus comes from decorations within range, not the field on which the building stands, so arrange them smartly around it. In case of coal shortages, you can also save yourself through the marketplace, where resources can be exchanged or purchased, but only a higher level of your own production will sustain you in the long run, not buying.
Common mistakeA common mistake is to leave Charcoal Burners at a low level and instead of upgrading, clutter the castle with additional pieces. This wastes valuable space, and the production per square meter is poor. The second mistake is to build it too early, before you actually need coal, unnecessarily blocking space that could be better utilized by another building.
