Guardhouse – Goodgame Empire

Guardhouse

Military

A cheap anti-espionage insurance with a single level that is only worth it for active PvP players; otherwise, you can wait or not need it at all.

Quick overview

CategoryMilitary
Max level1
Size6×6
PriorityOptional

The Watchtower is a purely defensive building against espionage. It increases the number of city guards that protect your camp from enemy spies, making it harder for the attacker to find out what units and defenses you have inside before the attack. Honestly, it's more of a supplementary building for players who focus on PvP and want to complicate reconnaissance for their opponents. Don't expect any boosts to your economy or attack from it; it does one thing and does it well.

When to build it

You definitely don't need to rush it. As long as you are not active in PvP and your opponents are not regularly targeting you with espionage, it can be completely stress-free at the bottom of your priority list. First, build your economy, barracks, and main defenses of walls and towers. Only consider the Watchtower when someone starts regularly scanning you with spies and you want to hide what troops you have at home. With a size of 6×6, it also takes up a lot of space, so think about whether you need that spot for something more useful.

Is it worth upgrading?

This is simple. The Watchtower has a maximum level of 1, so you don't have to deal with any upgrades. You build it, and that's it; you have the full effect right from the start. So don't expect to pour resources into it for higher levels; it doesn't have any.

Pro player tipThe Watchtower works best in combination with a solid unit defense. When an opponent cannot see what you have at home due to increased guards, they will have a harder time estimating whether an attack is worth it, and often they will either lose interest or attack blindly into your defensive stack. The building itself won't protect you, won't increase your defense strength, but as a layer of fog over a well-defended camp, it gives you the upper hand in creating uncertainty for your opponent.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is to take the Watchtower as a substitute for real defense. It won't increase the strength of your defenders nor protect your camp from a real attack; it only makes reconnaissance harder for spies. Another classic mistake is building it too early in PvE, where no one is spying on you anyway, unnecessarily blocking a 6×6 area that you could use better elsewhere.
