Military

The Command Center doesn't attack or defend, but it determines how many armies you can have in the game at once: essential for an active player.

Quick overview

CategoryMilitary
Max level15
Size6×6
PriorityMedium priority

The Command Center determines how many commanders you can have available. And that's what it's all about. Without them, you can't send troops outside the castle: no attacks on foreign castles, no assistance to allies in defense, no resource gathering from neighbors, no garrisons at distant targets. Each army you send beyond the gate holds one commander, so the number of commanders directly determines how many actions you can initiate at once. From my perspective, it's one of the most underrated military buildings. Players pour resources into barracks and workshops and then wonder why they can't attack while also holding someone in defense. The answer is often: too few commanders.

When to build it

It depends on what kind of player you are. If you play purely economically and don't rush into PvP, you can wait. However, once you start attacking, gathering resources from neighbors, or participating in alliance actions, the Command Center is one of the first things you want to get going. One free commander is very few. The second and third free commanders will open up a completely different style of play for you. I recommend getting it started the moment you first encounter a situation where you want to send troops somewhere and the game tells you that you have no free commander. That's a signal that you're holding yourself back.

Is it worth upgrading?

Upgrading is worth it, but not to max strength right away. Each additional level adds capacity for commanders, but the increments don't come one at a time for each level: for a while, you build just for one more commander a few levels higher. So check in the game overview at which specific level you'll get another commander, and build purposefully to that level, not blindly through intermediate levels. You can skip the intermediate levels that don't add any new commanders in priority and return to them when you have nothing else to build. You'll appreciate the full number of commanders at maximum level mainly in the late game and during active PvP or alliance wars.

Pro player tipPlan the number of commanders based on what you are actually doing. For simultaneous attack and defense, you need at least two free commanders; for multi-wave attacks or holding garrisons at multiple targets, even more. Remember that a commander is occupied the entire time the army is on the way and at the location, so one free commander can get stuck for a long time. The building takes up 6×6 squares, so leave reasonable space for it in your castle and don't shove it into a corner at the last minute where you can't build anything else.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is to completely forget about the Command Center and leave it at a low level until you hit a wall. You gather an army, but you only have one free commander, so when you send an attack, you have no one to defend with or send another wave. The second classic mistake is the opposite: pouring resources into the Command Center for levels that don't bring any additional commanders, instead of putting those resources into production or units. It's not about having the highest level; it's about having enough commanders for the style of play you're engaging in.
