Traveling crossbowman – Goodgame Empire

Traveling crossbowman

Offensive Ranged Special

Above-average defensive shooter against shooting attacks - defense against shooters 30 is a solid number and will do its job on the walls. Attack 0 excludes him from the offense, but in defense, where he belongs, it does not play a role at all. The weakness remains melee defense 22, so never let him defend alone and always support him with tough melee units and tools on the walls.

The wandering crossbowman is a shooter who has an offensive focus in the data, but his values speak clearly: attack 0, but defense against shooters 30 and against melee 22. In practice, this means that you won't achieve anything with his attack; his strength lies purely in defense. Don't be misled by the label "offensive" - by itself, it is a defensive piece for the walls, not a candidate for an offensive campaign. With a cost of 250 and a consumption of 4 food, it ranks among the more expensive special units, but the defense against shooters 30 is above average and worth it.

How to use it

Place him in the defense of the castle or towers on the side where the enemy is pushing with shooters. Important: in castle defense, the unit's attack does not apply to anyone - defending units only use their defensive values. Attack 0 does not matter here at all; this is common for defensive pieces. What counts is his defense against shooters 30, which holds up really well against the opponent's archers and crossbowmen. On the other hand, do not throw him into the offensive army - with attack 0, you won't cause any damage, and as a loss absorber, you have better and cheaper options.

What to combine it with

In castle defense, the combination of defensive tools and wall bonuses mainly determines the outcome - the unit is just one component. Deploy defensive machines that increase the defense against shooters, and his numbers will rise even higher. He has only 22 against melee, so complement him with units that have strong melee defense to prevent the enemy from breaking through with swordsmen and knights. Ideal mix: these crossbowmen against shooting threats, alongside tough melee defenders and the right tools on the walls.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Do not send him into attack - attack 0 means zero damage, and you are just wasting capacity and food. In defense, do not place him as the only type of unit: melee defense 22 is weak, so against a purely melee wave, he will quickly fall if there is no one to cover him. And do not place him on the side where the opponent is pushing with swordsmen and knights - there, his strong shooting defense will not protect him. He is a specialist against enemy shooters, not a universal defender.

Pro player tipCheck the spies to see what the opponent is using against you. When you see an overwhelming number of shooters, stack more of these crossbowmen on that side, and the defense against shooters 30 will absorb most of the assault. You will get even more out of it if you add defensive tools on the walls - they often add more to the defense than the unit itself. Speed 28 is decent, and moving between castles won't slow you down.
Common mistakeA common mistake is to take the label "offensive focus" literally and send him to attack - but with attack 0, you won't achieve anything, and in attack, he is dead weight. The second mistake is the opposite: thinking that attack 0 is a disadvantage even in defense. It is not. In castle defense, attack does not apply to any unit, so here you should judge him purely by his defensive values. And do not confuse him with regular crossbowmen from the barracks - this one is a special piece with a different role.
