Bowman – Goodgame Empire

Bowman

Offensive Ranged

A cheap and fast offensive ranged unit for the start of the game. Attack 24 for 35 coins and 2 food, 35 second recruiting and speed 75 make him a good addition to the attack army next to infantry. He is not suited to defense, with 8 against melee he cannot hold anything. The Crossbowman from the same Barracks has more attack per food, so over time the Bowman stays mainly for evening out numbers.

The Bowman, together with the Crossbowman, is one of the first ranged units from the Barracks (level 2), and it is an offensive unit. It attacks from a distance and its attack is 24, which is a decent start for a unit costing 35 coins and 2 food. Its defense is weak on the other hand, 24 against ranged and only 8 against melee, so it does not belong on the walls. Take him as a cheap attacker for the start of the game, to be replaced over time by stronger ranged units from higher Barracks levels.

How to use it

Send him in the attack army as the ranged part of the wave. His attack 24 is measured against the target's defense against ranged, so he does the most against a defender who built his garrison mainly from infantry and neglected defense against ranged units. His big advantage is speed. Recruiting takes only 35 seconds per unit and in the field he moves at speed 75, so you replace losses after an attack right away and reach nearby targets early. He carries 13 loot. Remember that 24 is the base level 1 value before bonuses. Against a defender with high defense against ranged, such as the Longbowman with 125, a mass of Bowmen alone can do little.

What to combine it with

In attack, complement him with infantry. A defender has separate defense against melee and against ranged, so a purely ranged wave hits only one of those numbers and nobody exploits the target's weaker melee defense. Early in the game the Spearman (attack 26 for 30 coins) or the Maceman (attack 38 for 45 coins) go well with the Bowman. In the same Barracks you also have the Crossbowman, who has attack 36 for 50 coins and the same 2 food, so he gives more attack per food. The Bowman beats him on price and on being recruited twice as fast, so he is good for evening out numbers when you want to send a larger wave quickly.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

He is not suited to defending the castle. Defense 8 against melee is almost nothing and even the 24 against ranged is low. The Archer from Barracks level 3 has 53 and 55, and even the Militia from level 1 has 27 against melee. On the walls you just pay food for weak defense. In attack, on the other hand, do not send him alone against a target defended mainly by ranged units with high defense against ranged, there attack 24 can do little and you lose your troops.

Pro player tipLosses are replaced cheaply and quickly with the Bowman, 35 coins and 35 seconds per unit. It pays to keep a queue running in the Barracks and top up the army right after every attack. At the start of the game, when you attack mostly nearby targets, speed 75 saves you time and your attacks turn around faster. Do not invest in him too much in the long run though, in attack he is replaced by the Crossbowman and later by the Heavy crossbowman from Barracks level 5 with attack 92.
Common mistakeThe most common newbie mistake is building the castle defense out of Bowmen because they are cheap and plentiful. With defense 8 against melee an attacker with infantry sweeps them away. The Bowman is an offensive unit and his 24 belongs in attack. The second classic is attacking with Bowmen only and no infantry, since a defender with strong defense against ranged stops such a wave. Mix the types, not just one kind.
