Renegade cave hunter – Goodgame Empire

Renegade cave hunter

Offensive Ranged Special

A strong attacking ranged unit from the Underworld with the second highest ranged attack in the database. Attack 200 makes it the striking core of a ranged wing, especially against targets with infantry defense. You pay for it with food upkeep of 8 and a lower speed of 25, so keep it in the attack, not in the garrison, and ideally send it together with the Renegade cave smasher. If you play the Underworld and attack actively, it is worth taking.

The Renegade cave hunter is an attacking ranged unit you get as a reward from the Underworld event. It is the player version of the ogre crossbowman that you meet as the NPC Cave hunter in the cave castles. Its ranged attack is 200, which is the second highest value among attacking ranged units in our database, only the Glacial Amazon Archer is higher with 372. Defense 21 against melee and 47 against ranged is only a side figure, this unit doesn't belong on the walls. You pay for its strength in food, 8 per unit is, together with the Renegade cave smasher, the most in the database, and the cost is 300.

How to use it

It belongs in the ranged part of your attacking army against castles and camps where the defender relies on infantry and has low ranged defense. Attack 200 is measured against the target's ranged defense, and the weaker that is, the more of it gets through. Speed 25 is lower than the 28 that many event attackers have, and the army moves at the pace of its slowest unit, so with Renegade cave hunters it will arrive later. Loot of 50 per unit means it carries off a decent share when plundering. Food upkeep of 8 adds up quickly with a large number though, so watch the food balance in the castle where you keep them, and don't take more of them than you will actually send into an attack.

What to combine it with

The most natural partner is the Renegade cave smasher from the Underworld shop. It has melee attack 216, the same speed 25, the same cost 300 and the same food upkeep of 8, so both units move at the same pace and cover both types of defense. The smasher takes on sides where the defender has weak melee defense, the Renegade cave hunter those where ranged defense is weak. Split the wave according to your spy report so that each side gets the type the defender is weaker against, and add attack tools for the walls and gate so the fortifications don't cut more from the attack than they have to. A commander with attack bonuses will strengthen the whole wave further.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Don't put it in your castle's defense. Defense 21 and 47 is low for a defender, a regular Veteran bowman has 65 against melee and 132 against ranged and would completely overshadow it in a garrison, and on top of that the Renegade cave hunter would eat 8 food per unit at home. Don't send it at targets either where the spy report shows high ranged defense, because attack 200 melts away there. And don't pull it out for small raids on weakly defended camps, cheaper units are enough for those, and you can't refill the event reward in the barracks.

Pro player tipUse it as the core of your ranged wing and fill it out with cheaper ranged units, because on a wing the attack of all units adds up. Before the attack, go through the spy report and look for the side with a majority of infantry in the defense, because that is where attack 200 has the best chance to get through. And keep it in a castle where food production has some reserve, otherwise 8 food per unit will quickly eat your stocks.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is noticing that it has no melee attack and treating it as a defender or as a mere shield in the wave. It is a ranged unit and its ranged attack 200 is among the strongest in the database, so in the attack wave it goes as striking power, not as an arrow carrier. The second mistake is placing it behind your own walls, where with defense 21 and 47 it falls and still eats food. And the third is collecting a lot of them and letting them sit at home, food upkeep of 8 per unit adds up with an idle army.
