Raven chomper – Goodgame Empire

Raven chomper

Offensive Ranged Special

A solid attacking ranged unit from the Halloween points event. Attack 135 is comparable to good ranged units from the barracks and the cost of 200 is half that of event ranged units with attack 162, which cost 400. It isn't suited for the walls, defense 28 and 19 is weak. You'll get the most out of it paired with the Pumpkin butcher from the same event against targets with weaker ranged defense. You can't get it from the barracks, wait for the Halloween points event.

The Raven chomper is an attacking ranged unit from the Halloween points event. Like every ranged unit it attacks at range, and its attack 135 is roughly on the level of good ranged units from the barracks, a bit more than the Crossbowman of the Elite Guard (129) and a bit less than the Spear woman (138). Its defense is weak, 28 against ranged and 19 against melee, so it clearly belongs in the attack, not on the walls. On top come food upkeep of 4, a cost of 200 and a speed of 30. Among the Halloween ranged units it is one of the cheaper ones. All of these are base level 1 values, that is, numbers before bonuses from the commander, tools and other sources.

How to use it

In practice, send it in attack waves as the ranged component of the army. Attack 135 works best against targets whose garrison has low ranged defense, so inspect the target with a spy first and decide accordingly how many ranged units and how many melee units to send. Against defenders with high ranged defense, keep it more in the minority. Speed 30 is slightly higher than most special ranged units have, they most often have 28. Don't leave it on castle defense, with defense 28 and 19 it won't last long there against a stronger attack.

What to combine it with

The natural partner is the Pumpkin butcher from the same Halloween event. It is a melee attacking unit with attack 145, it also costs 200, consumes 4 food and has the same speed of 30, so they march together without one holding back the other. The Pumpkin butcher deals with defenders with weak melee defense, the Raven chomper with those who have weak ranged defense. Add attack tools and a commander with attack bonuses. Stronger Halloween attackers like the Fire witch go well with them too, just keep in mind that with speed 28 it will slow the whole march a bit. For defense reach for units built for the walls, the Raven chomper in a defensive mix just takes up space.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Don't put it in your castle's defense. Defense 28 against ranged and 19 against melee is weak, and units built for defense will serve you better in a garrison. Don't send it at a target where the garrison holds high ranged defense either, a pure ranged wave would run into trouble there and you'd needlessly lose event units. And don't expect to replace losses from the barracks, it is an event reward. Don't rely on it as your only attacking unit either, without melee units you won't exploit the weakness of defenders who have low melee defense.

Pro player tipKeep the Raven chomper and the Pumpkin butcher together, they have the same speed of 30 and complement each other, one attacks at range and the other in melee. Before the attack, look at how the target's garrison stands on ranged defense and adjust the ratio accordingly. Attack 135 is a base value before bonuses, so the result is influenced a lot by the commander and the tools you attack with. Event units are harder to replace, so send them where they have a chance to succeed.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is to consider it a defender and leave it on the walls. With defense 28 and 19 it lasts little there, while in the attack its 135 does decent work. The second mistake is piling it in full numbers onto a target with high ranged defense and expecting the same result as against a weakly defended castle. The third is mixing it with significantly slower units, the army then moves at the pace of the slowest. And don't confuse it with the pricier Halloween ranged units, the Fire witch has attack 162, but costs 400 and consumes 5 food, so that is a different category.
