Assassin – Goodgame Empire

Assassin

Offensive Ranged Special

A fast attacking ranged unit with attack 152 that pairs well with the Demon slayer from the same shop in the attack wave. At a cost of 180 it is cheaper than ranged units with 162 attack costing 400. Its defense is weak, so it doesn't belong on the walls, but in an attack on targets with infantry defense it does honest work. If you collect amulets in the Thorn King and attack actively, it is worth buying.

The Assassin is an attacking ranged unit from the shop in the Thorn King event, where you buy it with amulets, 150 amulets for 25 units. Its ranged attack is 152, which is the highest value in our database among ranged units costing up to 180. Its defense is modest, 11 against melee and 17 against ranged, so this is a unit for the attack wave, not for the walls. It eats 6 food and costs 180.

How to use it

It belongs in the ranged part of your attacking army. Attack 152 is measured in battle against the defenders' ranged defense, so you get the most out of it against targets where the defender builds mainly on infantry and has low ranged defense. Speed 70 is one of the highest among attacking ranged units in the database, so it won't slow your army down unless you add slow units to it. Loot is only 8 per unit, so don't bring it along to plunder a castle, its job is to break through the defense. On the walls it would just die with defense 11 and 17, so keep it in the attack and send it at targets where you see a majority of melee units in the spy report.

What to combine it with

The most natural partner is the Demon slayer from the same shop in the Thorn King. It has melee attack 178, the same speed 70, the same cost 180 and the same food upkeep of 6, so both units move at the same pace and complement each other. The Demon slayer takes on defenders with weak melee defense, the Assassin those with weak ranged defense. Split them according to your spy report so that each side gets the type the defender is weaker against, and add attack tools for the walls and gate.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Don't put it in your castle's defense. Defense 11 against melee and 17 against ranged is very low for a defender, and a regular Veteran bowman has 65 and 132 and completely overshadows it in a garrison. Don't send it at targets either where the spy report shows strong ranged defense, because attack 152 simply melts away there. And don't build an attack from Assassins alone, because against a defender with high ranged defense you'd have nothing to answer with.

Pro player tipYou buy it in packs of 25 for 150 amulets, and the Demon slayer is sold in the shop for the same currency. Before you spend your amulets, check whether your targets are defended mostly by infantry or by ranged units, and split your purchase between the two units accordingly. Before the attack, go through the spy report and look for the side where the defender has built mainly melee units, because that is where the Assassin with attack 152 has the best chance to get through. Because of its loot of 8, don't count it into an army meant for raiding.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is to treat it as a defender just because it has no melee attack. It is a ranged unit, its attack 152 is ranged and it belongs in the attack wave. The second mistake is leaving it standing on the walls, where with defense 11 and 17 it falls among the first. And don't confuse it with the Corrupted assassin, which is an NPC defender from a temporary server, not this unit.
