Bodkin arrowheads

Defensive

A reliable piece for defensive slots against ranged attacks, but only as an addition to units and walls, not as a standalone solution.

Quick overview

TypeDefensive

Square arrow tips are purely a defensive item for the castle. They strengthen the defense against ranged units, so when an opponent sends a wave of archers at you, these will help you hold the walls. You place them in the defensive slots of the castle or tower, and their strength adds up with what you already have there. Don't expect miracles from a single piece, but as one of the pieces of the defensive puzzle, it will do its job.

How to use it

Deploy them when you know an attack based on archers is coming your way. They belong to castle defense, not offense, so keep them in reserve for when you are defending your position or holding contested territory. It pays to have them deployed in advance, because once the raid hits, you won't have time to replenish the defensive slots. Place them where you anticipate pressure on ranged defense.

What to combine it with

Stack them alongside tools that strengthen close defense, so you cover both sides and the attacker doesn't find a gap. They will only boost ranged defense on their own, but the actual durability of the walls is mainly taken care of by your defensive units and castle walls, so think of the tips as an addition to them, not a replacement. The slots in the castle and tower have limited capacity, so think carefully about what you place there. They fit into pure defense, but do not take them into an offensive expedition.

Pro player tipDeploy them strategically based on what your opponent is sending. Are you mostly receiving ranged attacks? This is where you will save the most units. There’s no reason to waste them on every ordinary skirmish where you could hold your ground with basic defense. Save them for raids where ranged defense truly decides whether you can withstand the attack or not.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is to cram them into an offensive setup and wonder why they do nothing. They are defensive, useless in offense. Another classic is to only strengthen ranged defense and forget about close defense, allowing the opponent to break through from the other side. And feel free to plan them, but if you leave them sitting in your inventory instead of in a slot, they won't protect you from an attack.
