War horn – Goodgame Empire

War horn

Defensive

A specialized buff for melee defense — excellent in the right combination, unnecessary outside of it.

Quick overview

TypeDefensive

The War Horn is a defensive tool that you place in the tool slot and increases the combat strength of soldiers fighting in close combat, namely swordsmen and similar infantry. As a defensive piece, it is especially useful when you are defending a castle and expect that the close combat defense will bear the main brunt — while the attacker is pressing you, the horn will add to your defenders in close combat. Players appreciate it for being a simple, straightforward buff without unnecessary complications — no conditions, no combo dependencies, just a boost to close combat.

How to use it

Always equip it when you know that the backbone of your defense will be units fighting in close combat. Before you set up your defense, review what the opponent is likely to attack you with and how they have arranged their assault — as soon as you see that you want to hold the line with infantry and swords, the War Horn belongs in your equipment. It makes no sense to bring it where you primarily rely on ranged defenders, as they are not affected by the buff and you would waste a slot. Think of it as a specialized tool: it is excellent in the right defense, but outside of it, it is dead weight.

What to combine it with

It fits into a purely melee defense, where you rely on soldiers fighting in close combat and want to push their line as high as possible. It pairs excellently with a commander who provides a bonus to close combat, and with tools and equipment that strengthen the same type of units — this way, you stack buffs on one target category and the defense really holds. Conversely, do not mix it into universal mixed setups with a large proportion of ranged units, where its effect would remain largely unused.

Pro player tipBefore you include it, check what proportion of your units actually fights in close combat — it only pays off once swords and infantry make up the majority of the defense. Keep it as part of a specialized melee defense and do not bring it into every action blindly. In combination with a commander buffing close combat, you will get significantly more out of it than if you deploy it alone.
Common mistakeA common mistake is to deploy the War Horn in a mixed or ranged defense and wonder why it does not hold as expected — the buff applies exclusively to soldiers fighting in close combat, so it is completely useless on ranged and distant units. Another classic is forgetting to switch it out at all, so you bring it into every battle regardless of what units you are building, unnecessarily blocking a slot that could have been filled with a tool that would actually help you.
