Watchtower – Goodgame Empire

Watchtower

A cheap way to know exactly what is coming your way and hit the defense accordingly - it belongs in every castle that matters.

Quick overview

Max level10
Size5×5
PriorityMedium priority

The Watchtower gives you a solid overview of what is coming your way. You will see the attack in the overview anyway, but the tower will provide you with details - how many troops are approaching, what type of units they are, and when they will arrive. Based on this information, you decide whether it makes sense to reinforce the wall, deploy a defensive tool, call for alliance help, or just leave it be. It does not defeat any enemies by itself; it is purely an informational building, but the difference between 'blind' defense and defense based on specific data is enormous. Players consider it a must-have for their castle, as it does not take up defensive value but fundamentally changes how well you can react.

When to build it

Build it relatively early, as soon as you have covered the basic resources and at least some defense on the wall. It is especially useful when you enter an area where other players start farming you, or when attacks start to matter more than at the beginning. It takes up 5×5 space, so make sure to leave a reasonable spot for it. It is not the first building you construct, but do not postpone it indefinitely - the sooner you see exactly what you are dealing with, the better you can prepare your defense.

Is it worth upgrading?

It is worth it. Each level improves how accurately and in detail you see the details of the attack - the number and type of troops, the time of impact. And that is exactly what you need to make the right decisions and not just guess. If you are frequently attacked, keep the tower at a decent level; the investment will pay off every time you hit the defense based on precise numbers. If no one is bothering you, you can keep it lower and postpone upgrades for economic and defensive buildings.

Pro player tipLearn to estimate from more precise information whether it is a serious attack or just probing - based on that, you can tell whether it is worth addressing the defense fully or letting it go. And connect the tower with an active alliance: as soon as you see the number and type of incoming troops, you can write to your allies specifically about what support you need for the wall, and they will send you the right type of random troops.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is to build the tower and then not use its information. When you see exactly how many and what type of troops are approaching, but you still leave the wall as it is and do not write to the alliance, that detail is useless to you. Another classic is to completely ignore the tower and then estimate attacks blindly - without it, you do not know if it is a serious strike or just probing, and you either overreact to the defense unnecessarily or underestimate it and get plundered.
