Veteran Swordsman is a special attack infantry you won't recruit in the barracks - you only get it from special offers or events. With 149 attack, it ranks among the hardest infantry you can send to the front line, and the game itself describes it as very strong in attack and ideal for fighting ranged defenders. Defense of 20 against melee and 15 against ranged is just a number, so this is pure offense with no secondary role.
How to use it
Send it in attack waves on infantry slots where defenders hold walls mainly with ranged units. Archers and crossbowmen have weak melee defense and that's where the 149 attack hits hardest. It works on other players' castles and on camps where your agents show ranged defense. Speed 28 is decent for infantry so it doesn't slow the march, and with 35 loot per unit you'll take something extra from the conquered target.
What to combine it with
It won't break the whole defense alone. Where melee infantry stands on walls, you need attack ranged units next to it, like a Veteran Slinger, which is built exactly for close-range defenders. Split your wave based on agent reports - swordsmen on one flank with ranged, ranged on the other flank with infantry. Add siege tools that reduce defender wall bonuses and a commander with melee attack bonus, because percentages from a high base give the most.
Weaknesses and what to avoid
Never put it in defense. With 20 and 15 defense it falls first and you just lose a unit you can't replace from the barracks. Don't send it against a wall full of melee defenders either - spearmen and halberdiers will take that advantage away and losses will spike. And don't use it for routine farming of weak targets - regular units work fine for that and you have plenty.
