Veteran pyromaniac – Goodgame Empire

Veteran pyromaniac

Offensive Melee Veteran

Top-tier attack infantry with 160 attack whose main value is also in damaging the target's buildings. The price is zero usefulness in defense and weak loot carrying capacity. When you attack a player and have ranged in your wave, it's one of the best tools you can get from special offers and events.

Veteran Maul is melee attack infantry with 160 attack that regular barracks units can't come close to. The official description says it causes extreme damage to enemy buildings during plunder, and that's what sets it apart from other attack melee units. Defense of 19 against melee and 4 against ranged makes it clear you won't defend with it. You only get it from special offers and events - you won't find it in research or the barracks.

How to use it

You put it in attack waves on player castles where building damage actually hurts. Burning buildings produce less and worsen public order, so a successful attack with mauls doesn't just cost the enemy units but also slows their economy while they repair everything. With speed 32 it's classic infantry so plan it for attacks on targets you've already scouted. Food consumption of 5 is acceptable for a unit with that attack, but watch how many you're holding because these are units you can't replace.

What to combine it with

Pair it with attack ranged units in your wave because the target's defense has both melee and ranged parts and a pure infantry wave will stall once the enemy has ranged defenders. Against a castle with lots of ranged defenders send fewer mauls and build the rest of the wave on ranged attack - against melee defense add more mauls. A commander with melee attack bonus and battering rams on the gate or ladders on the walls boost its effectiveness - attack bonuses from your castle and alliance add on top of the base 160. If it's mainly about loot, add a Veteran Raider to the same wave - a maul with 31 carrying capacity won't take much.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Don't put it in castle defense - with 4 defense against ranged, archers on the ramparts will shoot it down before it gets to fight. Don't send it alone against a castle with balanced defense and don't count on it as a universal unit - it does one thing and does it well. And don't waste it on camps and weak targets where building damage means nothing - its main strength goes to waste there.

Pro player tipIn war with a player, save your mauls for attacks where the enemy castle should burn - that means the main castle or the base supplying them with units. Scout before you attack and set the ratio of mauls and ranged based on the report. Watch for events with points for fire damage from attacks - that's where a maul pays off more than anywhere else.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is stuffing mauls into the defense garrison thinking 19 melee defense will hold something. The 4 against ranged will sink it. The second mistake is treating it as a loot unit - 35 carrying capacity is low and it lacks what the raider has for warehouse plunder, its job is destroying buildings and breaking defense.
