Tentacle – Goodgame Empire

Tentacle

Offensive Melee Special

An excellent melee defensive unit that costs no food, worth having if you acquire it from a special offer or event. Its attack is average, so do not consider it as an offensive powerhouse. A clear weakness against ranged units (45) makes it a specialist, not a universal unit - great for mixed defense, poor when isolated.

The Tentacle is a defensive wall disguised as an offensive unit. With a melee defense of 135, it is one of the toughest melee units you can build on walls or in camps, but its attack of 109 is rather average for an "offensive focus". It has a food consumption of zero, so you can keep it in your garrison permanently without worrying about supplies.

How to use it

In practice, deploy it mainly for castle defense. The number 135 against melee means that attackers with infantry and battering rams will hit it like a wall. The zero food consumption is key here - it fills your defensive slot without consuming supplies like regular units from the barracks. When taking it into attack, keep in mind that its attack of 109 is solid but not top-tier, so send it mainly against targets defended by melee, where its high defense will help you through the attacking waves with fewer losses.

What to combine it with

Classic combination: The Tentacle holds the melee line, and next to it, you should place good ranged units for defense, as the Tentacle has a poor 45 against ranged units - that gap needs to be covered by a unit strong against ranged attacks. A practical mix for the defensive slot is about two-thirds Tentacles and one-third archers, so you have a solid melee line and a shield against ranged fire. In castle defense, mix it with defensive archers and artillery on towers. In attack, combine it with tools (battering rams, ladders) and units that will supplement the firepower, so your wave doesn't rely solely on its attack of 109.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Do not build it as the main defense against ranged units - with 45 defense, enemy archers will take down the line in one wave, and the entire defense will collapse. Also, do not take it as a purely offensive unit against targets that will punish you with archers on towers; it will bleed out there. And there’s no point in stuffing it somewhere you already have enough melee and lack ranged defense - you will only deepen your weakness against ranged units.

Pro player tipTip: because it has zero food consumption, feel free to keep it in a full defensive slot in a castle that you use as a storage - it won't eat your supplies and still provides heavy melee defense. Just don't forget to supplement it with a few archers, so you don't get shredded by archers through that 45. If you have it in limited quantities from an event, save it for the defense of your home castle, where its 135 against melee is most beneficial.
Common mistakeA common mistake is to look only at the "offensive focus" and throw Tentacles into every attacking wave. Its true strength is in melee defense, not attack. The second mistake: building only Tentacles and forgetting about defense against ranged units - the opponent will immediately exploit this and send archers at you, who will take down your line in one wave through your 45 defense.
