The Stone smasher is an NPC ranged unit you meet as a defender of the native camps on the Storm Islands, you can't recruit it. Its main asset is ranged defense 125, against melee it has 51. Its ranged attack is 92, so it isn't zero, but in a camp it stands on defense, so as an attacker you are interested mainly in its defenses.
How to use it
You come into contact with it when you attack native camps. Your attacking ranged units run into its defense of 125 there, melee units only into 51, and this very difference is the most important thing you need to know about it. The more Stone smashers defend a camp, the more it pays to shift the weight of the attack to melee units. Both numbers are base values and the result of the fight is also influenced by bonuses on both sides, so treat them as a guide, not an exact calculation. Food upkeep 0, cost 0 and speed 0 are just technical data for an NPC defender, you will never manage these units or send them anywhere.
What to combine it with
Against a camp with Stone smashers, build the attack with a majority of melee units, because that is where the defender has the weaker side of 51. Don't leave ranged units out completely, if the camp is also defended by units with high melee defense, fine-tune the ratio according to everything that stands in the camp. Attack tools that reduce the strength of ranged defenders will help you, and so will a commander with a bonus to melee attack. The player version of this unit is the Renegade stone smasher, a reward from the Storm Islands, but it plays completely differently, it is an attacking ranged unit with attack 135 and weak defense of 22 against melee and 30 against ranged. So don't confuse the two units.
Weaknesses and what to avoid
Don't try to look for it in the barracks or in the offers, it is only an NPC defender and can't be recruited. And don't send a pure ranged army at a camp with Stone smashers, it would run exactly into its stronger defense of 125 instead of the weaker 51 against melee, and you would pay for it with needless losses.
