Spear thrower – Goodgame Empire

Spear thrower

Defensive Ranged Special

An NPC defender of nomad camps with strong ranged defense and weak melee defense. You can't get it into your own army or garrison, it matters to you as an opponent. Where the spy shows it, attack with melee infantry and send your ranged units elsewhere. If you want a similar unit for your castle, reach for the Renegade spear thrower, which the Nomad Invasion event gives as a defensive reward.

The Spear thrower is an NPC ranged unit that defends the nomad camps in the Nomad Invasion event. You can't recruit it, you only meet it on the other side of the walls. Its strong number is ranged defense 139, against melee it holds only 35. Its ranged attack is 14, but when attacking a camp it is mainly its defense numbers that interest you.

How to use it

For you it is mainly information on how to take a camp. Your melee attacking units run into its defense of 35, ranged units into its defense of 139. Where the spy shows many Spear throwers, send attacking infantry at that wing and save your ranged units for another part of the wall. Don't worry about its cost or food upkeep, it is an NPC unit and won't make it into your army. The player version with higher melee defense is called the Renegade spear thrower and is a defensive reward from the same event.

What to combine it with

The nomad camps are also defended by the Lancer, another NPC unit from the same event, which has the opposite profile, high melee defense and weak ranged defense. That is why you should attack camps with a mixed army and split it according to spying. Send attacking infantry against the Spear throwers and attacking ranged units against the Lancers. The same setup on all wings does worse here than a split based on the defenders.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Don't send a pure ranged army at a camp defended by Spear throwers. With defense 139 your ranged units run into its strongest side and the attack can shatter, while infantry would succeed much more easily against defense 35. And don't attack blindly, without spying you don't know on which wing the Spear throwers stand and where to send the infantry.

Pro player tipAlways spy on the camp before the attack and look at where the Spear throwers stand. The wing with them is weak against melee, so send your strongest attacking infantry and attack tools there. Keep your ranged units for places defended by units with low ranged defense, for example Lancers. If you want a Spear thrower for your own defense, look in the nomad shop for the Renegade spear thrower, this NPC version can't be recruited.
Common mistakeA common mistake is to send the same army at nomad camps as everywhere else and drive ranged units against Spear throwers, where they run into defense 139. The second is confusing it with the player version and counting on it for your own defense, this unit can't be recruited.
