The Renegade spear thrower is a defensive ranged unit that you get as a defensive reward from the Nomad Invasion event in the nomad shop for khan tablets. Its point lies in two numbers, 139 defense against ranged and 68 against melee. Its ranged attack is only 14, a fraction compared to attacking ranged units, so it belongs in the castle garrison, not in the attack. Defense is paired with the type of the attacking unit, so 139 comes into play against enemy ranged units and 68 against melee attackers. Compared to the NPC Spear thrower from the nomad camps it has a significantly higher melee defense.
How to use it
In practice you put it in the defensive garrison where opponents regularly send ranged units at you. The value 139 is decent, but take it soberly, the defensive ranged units from the barracks in the mid game are in a similar range, so it won't win the battle for you on its own. Food upkeep of 3 and a cost of 180 are reasonable and won't upset your economy. Speed 32 is handy when you send reinforcements to allies or to your own threatened castle. If the attacker switches to melee units, 68 defense is just average and you have to complement the garrison with melee defenders.
What to combine it with
Never leave it alone in the garrison, against a strong melee wave it won't hold. Mix it with a defender with high melee defense, for example the Renegade lancer from the same event, which has the opposite profile. The Spear throwers then deal with incoming ranged units and the Lancers with melee combat. Add defensive tools on the walls, which raise the garrison's defense further. You get the most out of it where the opponent repeatedly pushes you with ranged units, and then adjust the ratio of Spear throwers to melee defenders based on the attack reports.
Weaknesses and what to avoid
Don't send it into the attack, with ranged attack 14 it only takes up space in an attacking army and eats food. Don't rely on it against opponents who come at you mainly with melee units either, its strong side won't show there. And don't overdo the numbers, if you are attacked by mixed or melee armies, don't fill the whole garrison with it, you're just wasting space.
