The Pumpkin Reaper is a purely offensive melee unit with an attack of 145, which is a decent number for close combat. The catch is its poor defense - 21 against melee and only 8 against ranged. Additionally, it is cheap (200 resources), so you can recruit it in larger numbers. Consider it purely as an offensive tool, not something that will survive in a garrison.
How to use it
In practice, deploy it exclusively in attacks, where you pressure the melee side of the enemy's defense. The attack of 145 will do its job, but the consumption of 4 food per unit is not free - on large waves, it will consume your supplies. If you are attacking a target with strong melee defense, combine it with ranged attackers to avoid hitting the same wall repeatedly. Do not use it for defending your own castle, both defensive values are so low that it will just die there.
What to combine it with
It works best mixed with ranged offensive units - they will cover the ranged defense of the target while the Pumpkin Reaper handles the melee side. With the right commander for attack and attack items, its attack of 145 can go even higher. Always deploy it with proper support bonuses; a mass of Pumpkin Reapers without a commander and tools is not effective.
Weaknesses and what to avoid
Do not use it for defense - 8 against ranged is a ridiculous number and the enemy will shoot it down before it can do anything. Also, do not deploy it against targets where ranged defense predominates - there your attack will hit a solid wall and the unit will fall unnecessarily. And watch out for food consumption; if you have a weak economy, a large army of Pumpkin Reapers will deplete your supplies.
