Norseman with bow – Goodgame Empire

Norseman with bow

Defensive Ranged Special

A defensive ranged unit of the Norseman castles from the winter event Ice Kingdom with ranged attack 1 and defense 31 against ranged and 18 against melee. He cannot be recruited, for you he is an opponent, not reinforcement. He is weaker against melee attackers, so against the bowmen send mainly melee units and leave the axemen in the same castles to your ranged units. Just do not confuse him with the stronger namesake from the Glacier of Eternal Winter.

The Norseman with bow is a defensive ranged unit that defends Norseman castles in the winter event Ice Kingdom. He is an NPC unit and cannot be recruited, so you only meet him as an opponent. Like every ranged unit he attacks from a distance, but his attack is a mere 1. In defense he has 31 against ranged and 18 against melee, and those two numbers are exactly what interests you when you send troops at his castle.

How to use it

When attacking a Norseman castle he stands on the walls as a defender and in defense the defensive values count. So attack 1 need not trouble you when planning, what matters is what you attack him with. Your melee attackers run into defense 18, ranged units into 31, so against the bowmen alone a melee attack is more advantageous. The difference is 13 points, so the defense against ranged is more than two thirds higher. Food upkeep 0 and zero price in the data mean nothing to you, you will never feed or buy this Norseman. The numbers on the page are base values before bonuses.

What to combine it with

The Norseman castles in the Ice Kingdom are also defended by the Norseman with axe, who has the defense the other way round, 33 against melee and only 9 against ranged. The bowman is weaker against a melee attack, the axeman against ranged units. A mixed attack therefore suits a castle where both stand. The more bowmen in the defense, the more it pays to send melee units, and the more axemen, the more ranged units. Both Norsemen have attack 1, but in defense it is their defensive numbers that decide, not attack. On top of that your army gets commander and equipment bonuses, which are not in the unit table, since it shows only the base values.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Do not send only ranged units at a castle full of bowmen, you would run into his stronger defense of 31 instead of 18. Likewise do not bet everything on a melee attack when Norsemen with axe predominate in the castle, they have 33 against melee. Do not confuse him with the Renegade Norseman bowman from the Barracks, that is a different unit with attack 86. And do not look for this Norseman in the Barracks, he cannot be recruited.

Pro player tipWatch the name. In the game there are two different units that are called Norseman with bow in Czech. This page describes the defender of Norseman castles from the winter event Ice Kingdom with attack 1 and defense 18 and 31. The same name is also carried by the defender of enemy towers and castles on the Glacier of Eternal Winter, who is much stronger, with ranged attack 92, defense 51 against melee and 125 against ranged. So when you plan an attack on the Glacier of Eternal Winter, expect higher numbers. The principle holds the same for both, both are weaker against melee attackers than against ranged units.
Common mistakeA common mistake is underestimating a castle only because the bowmen have attack 1. In defense it is defense that decides, not attack, and against ranged he has 31, so whoever sends only ranged units at them runs into their stronger side. The second mistake is the opposite, sending only melee attackers and forgetting that the castle is defended next to the bowmen by Norsemen with axe with 33 defense against melee. The third mistake is mixing him up with the stronger namesake from the Glacier of Eternal Winter and misjudging how many troops you need for the castle.
