Direwolf – Goodgame Empire

Direwolf

Offensive Melee Special

The Wolf is a solid melee offensive unit with an attack of 40, which is worthwhile against defenses built on melee units. However, it has one critical gap - zero defense against ranged units. If you deploy it smartly against the right targets and supplement it with ranged support, it is a useful core of the attack that saves you losses. Blindly sending it or against ranged units is just an expensive food consumption. As an event unit, it is worth having, but only in a reasonable number for situations where it excels.

The Wolf is a melee offensive unit and the first number you need to keep in mind is its attack of 40. Since you send it to attack foreign targets, this attack value is the main consideration - its own defense against melee combat (also 40) will only marginally save you, as the defense of the target you are attacking is what mainly matters. And beware of zero against ranged units: as soon as it encounters archers or crossbowmen, it will fall without resistance. The stars in the data are just a relative ranking (attack 2, defense 3, cost 4), so don't expect any specific game miracles from them - its attack is rather below average, and the cost is the worst aspect. You cannot train it from regular barracks; it is a special unit from special offers or events.

How to use it

In practice, you deploy the Wolf as a melee offensive wave against targets where the defender mainly relies on melee units - there your losses are kept down because its attack of 40 deals better with them than weaker cheap infantry. With a cost of 150 and a food consumption of 3, it makes it a moderately expensive unit, so you don't send it to be sacrificed by the hundreds like meat for numbers, but as a higher quality core of the offensive wave. A speed of 100 is standard, but don't ignore it: the pace of the entire army is determined by the slowest unit, so if you mix in something faster with the wolves, everything will still slow down to a hundred. You will get the most out of them when attacking defenses built on swords and spears.

What to combine it with

On its own, the Wolf is a dead end because it has no defense against ranged units. Always mix it into the offensive wave so that you also cover ranged - put Wolves in the melee slot and supplement them with your own ranged units or a unit with high defense against ranged in the same slot, so that enemy archers do not shoot down the wolves before it comes to melee exchange. If you have a commander (lord) with a bonus to melee attack, give him these wolves as the main striking core - the bonus adds to their attack, where they are no longer useless. Don't overdo the ratio of melee to ranged, otherwise the enemy's defense with ranged units will mow them down.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Never send Wolves against defenses built on ranged units - zero against ranged means that the enemy will shoot them down practically without losses, and you will just waste food and 150 resources per piece. The second thing: don't try to defend your own castle with them. In defense, the defensive value of the unit counts, and the Wolf is an offensive special - it is of no use on the walls, especially against an attack from archers. Offensive units belong on the attack, defensive units on the walls, don't confuse that. And don't take its role as "offensive" as a guarantee of top attack - 2 stars mean that in pure DPS, other specials will outperform it. The Wolf is good against melee defense, not as a universal crusher.

Pro player tipBefore each attack, check the defense of the target. Do you see a predominance of ranged units? Leave the wolves at home and send something with defense against ranged. Do you mainly see swords and spears? That’s where the Wolves shine and save you from more expensive elite units. This is the only check you really need to do with them - the rest is routine. And since it is an event special, don't produce them unnecessarily in stock. Train only as many as you will actually use for melee attacks, so the rest doesn't waste food for nothing.
Common mistakeA common mistake is to throw Wolves at everything just because they "look strong" and are from a special offer. Newbies do not check the defense of the target, send a wolf wave against a castle full of archers, and then watch as they lose their entire army without harming the enemy. Another classic is sending them completely without ranged support - that zero against ranged is a real weakness that you must solve with another unit in the wave, not ignore it.
