The Bear Warrior is classified as a close-range melee infantry, but one contradiction immediately catches your eye: it has an attack of only 117, while its defense against close combat is a solid 139. This is also confirmed by the star distribution, where the attack received 3 stars, but the defense got 4. So, despite the label "offensive," it is actually tougher when standing still and holding its ground than when it attacks on its own. With a consumption of 4 food and a cost of 180 resources, it is also among the more expensive specials, so you really don't throw it into battle like cheap meat.
How to use it
In practice, deploy it where you expect enemy close-range infantry. That 139 defense against melee is its core, so in a defensive setup on the flank or gate, where swordsmen and axemen are pushing against you, it holds up well. When attacking, send it to the side of the castle where the opponent has weaker melee defense, so that its attack of 117 hits where it hurts the opponent. Its speed of 25 is average, so consider it for wave formations like standard infantry; it won't reach the front any sooner or later than most close-range units.
What to combine it with
On its own, it is vulnerable to ranged attacks, so always mix it with archers or crossbowmen who can compensate for its poor defense against ranged attacks of 48. A classic functional setup is Bear Warriors in the front line for melee, backed by ranged units with high defense against ranged attacks. To attack, complement it with tools against walls and gates, as it cannot break down walls by itself; it only provides body-to-body combat. If you have stronger attacking melee units, place them at the front and use the Bear as a defensive shield.
Weaknesses and what to avoid
Do not send it against a ranged superiority, as it will be shot down before it even reaches the fight. A low defense against ranged attacks of 48 is not surprising for an offensive melee unit; it is quite common, but you must not forget about it. Do not consider it as a pure attacker if you have something with an attack higher than 117 at hand. And do not waste it in lost battles; it is an expensive special that you can only replenish from special offers or events, not from regular barracks, so every fallen Bear hurts more than the loss of a regular soldier.
