How Attacks Work (Mechanics)
Attacking is the core of the entire game, and its mechanics are easy to initiate but deep to master. You open the world map, click on a target, select the target (icon like a shooting target), and fill the waves with units and tools. Here we will go through what determines the outcome: the number of waves, presets, who you are allowed to attack, and what types of targets exist on the map.
How to Initiate an Attack
Go to the world map and click on the castle you want to attack. Then choose the option that looks like a shooting target. An attack window will open where you select units for each side. There is a auto-fill button available that fills all sides with soldiers and tools.
If you have previously spied on the target (reconnaissance), the game will automatically fill your most useful units and tools against the specific defense. You can also send a preset wave based on the hero's statistics. Reconnaissance before an attack is therefore the first thing every attacker should do.
Number of Attack Waves
The number of waves available to you depends on your level:
- Level 1-12: 1 wave.
- Level 13-36: 2 waves.
- Level 37-50: 3 waves.
- Level 51+: 4 waves.
- Legendary players in the Hall of Legends can have up to 6 waves.
Additionally, the number of waves can be increased using look items equipped on the commander. More waves mean more units and tools in a single attack, which is crucial against strong defenses.
Presets (Predefined Configurations)
The game can save the arrangement of tools and units into a preset, which you can then use next time with one click and update at any time. The maximum number of presets has been increased from 10 to 30.
Presets are unlocked for rubies, and the prices increase steeply. The first one is free, the second for 2200, the tenth for 12000, and the thirtieth for up to 72000 rubies. Unlocking all 30 presets costs approximately 948550 rubies in total (prices vary slightly between E4K and EM versions). Presets save a huge amount of time when attacking repeatedly similar targets.
Who You Can and Cannot Attack
You cannot attack members of your own alliance or alliances with which you have a pact. Conversely, you can attack alliances with a non-aggression agreement (NAA). Interesting fact: while you cannot send an army against your own alliance members, you can still send sabotage, plague doctors, or shadow attacks against them.
You can recognize an incoming attack by the corner in the upper left with a countdown. Red corner = attack on you, blue corner = attack on alliance teammates (you can send defensive support if you catch the countdown in time). The turquoise corner (attack on an alliance city) no longer exists in the game.
Types of Targets on the Map
You can attack many different targets, each with different difficulty and rewards:
- Raiding Barons (RBC): the easiest NPCs, they level up with you, and there are many of them on the map.
- Outposts: unlocked from level 13 with a stat. Harder than RBC, but conquering one gives you another castle. Attacking an occupied outpost can easily spark a war.
- Other Players: real people, difficulty varies based on level and skill. Retaliation is a risk.
- Foreign Castles / Bloodcrows: only during the Kingdom War event, always 50 travel units away.
- Shapeshifters: in the shapeshifter event, 150 travel units away (the farthest of all).
- Nomads and Samurai: event NPCs, always 2 travel units away, level up with attacks, provide a lot of resources and coins (nomads up to ~25k coins per attack for L70).
