Glacial Amazon Guardian – Goodgame Empire

Glacial Amazon Guardian

Defensive Melee Special

If you are a new player and get it from a special offer or event, take it without hesitation; a melee defensive unit with zero food consumption is always useful in wall defense. Experienced players also take it, but they understand it as one half of the defense, not as a complete solution. The number 368 against melee is excellent; you can easily cover the weakness of 147 against ranged attackers with a partner that has high defense against ranged attackers. As an event unit, it is definitely worth collecting.

The Ice Guardian of the Amazon is a purely defensive melee unit with a melee defense of 368, a value that is hard to surpass. Its attack is only 41, so never send it into battle; it is completely useless there. Its purpose is exclusively on the walls, where it withstands the onslaught of swords and axes. Bonus on top: food consumption is zero, so it doesn't eat up your supplies even when you gather full barracks.

How to use it

In practice, you place it in the defensive setup on the wall, ideally in castles where you realistically expect an attack focused on melee combat. A defense of 368 against swords is top-notch, but watch out for the weakness: it has only 147 against ranged attackers. That's a big difference and it matters every time because defense is calculated based on the type of attacker. So if an army of archers comes your way, this Amazon will hardly defend anything. Therefore, never place it in castles where you expect mainly ranged attackers.

What to combine it with

Here is the key to the entire unit: pair it with a defensive unit that has a high defense against ranged attackers to cover that gap of 147. Don't look at whether it's formally a spearman or something else; look directly at the defense against ranged attackers on the unit card. The ideal is a mixed crew, where half holds melee (these Amazons) and half covers against ranged attackers. In such a setup, the attacker will not find a weak spot, whether they send swords or bows. Defensive tools and bonuses from the walls then increase the defense of the entire crew proportionally (not the number 368 for one unit), so the better you assemble the crew, the more you will benefit from those bonuses.

Weaknesses and what to avoid

Do not use it for attack under any circumstances; an attack of 41 is ridiculous and you will just unnecessarily lose a unit that you can't get elsewhere. It is also not suitable as the sole defense of a castle because it has a huge gap against ranged attackers. And definitely do not place it in castles where you expect mainly ranged attacks; there you need a unit with high defense against ranged attackers, not this one. A classic mistake is to throw only Amazons on the wall and think that the castle is impregnable.

Pro player tipKeep it for key castles, especially the main castle and important forward bases where you are actually fighting. Zero food consumption is a luxury for an event unit; feel free to stockpile hundreds of them and it won't burden your production even a bit. When assembling wall defense, watch your ratio: count how much wall space you have and divide it roughly half and half between melee defense and defense against ranged attackers. A bunch of Amazons and nothing against archers is a setup that will fall under the first onslaught.
Common mistakeThe most common mistake is to throw it into defense alone and then wonder why the castle fell when the attacker simply sent only ranged attackers. Another classic is sending it with an army into attack because it is a melee unit; the player thinks it will attack well, but with an attack of 41, it's a pure loss. And newer players still forget that defensive numbers are calculated based on the type of attacker, so a strong 368 is completely useless when the enemy comes with archers.
